Clinical activity

Oncologic and reconstructive surgery, from breast-conserving procedures to microsurgical free flaps, within a multidisciplinary cancer care pathway.

Breast cancer, reconstruction and sequelae

The department performs the whole range of breast cancer surgery, from lumpectomy to mastectomy, with a strong focus on day surgery, oncoplastic techniques with glandular remodelling, and immediate reconstruction carried out during the same procedure as the mastectomy.

All reconstruction techniques are available:

  • autologous microsurgical reconstruction: DIEP, PAP, gracilis, lumbar artery perforator, fascia lata
  • pedicled flaps, including muscle-sparing latissimus dorsi with a short scar and no implant
  • prepectoral and retropectoral implant-based reconstruction, with synthetic or biological matrices
  • autologous fat transfer (lipofilling), nipple-areola reconstruction

Treatment of sequelae is part of our routine practice: breast deformity after lumpectomy and radiotherapy, asymmetry, arm lymphoedema.

Complex head and neck reconstruction

Reconstruction of the mandible, maxilla, oral cavity and pharyngolaryngeal tract is performed with microsurgical free flaps, using custom cutting guides and anatomical implants designed through 3D modelling.

These procedures are carried out jointly with the head and neck oncology department, from preoperative planning to functional rehabilitation.

Skin cancer and cutaneous reconstruction

Carcinomas and melanomas are operated on in close collaboration with the dermatology department. Oncologic excision and coverage, by skin graft, local flap or free flap, are planned together to preserve function and appearance.

Soft tissue sarcoma

Soft tissue sarcoma surgery and reconstruction of the limbs and trunk are carried out with the sarcoma board and the visceral surgery team, in a national reference centre for these rare tumours.

Chest wall and trachea

Chest wall and tracheal reconstruction is performed with the thoracic and vascular surgery department of Marie-Lannelongue Hospital, in particular after extensive resection or irradiation.

Paediatric reconstructive surgery

Reconstruction in children is provided together with the paediatric department of Gustave Roussy and the maxillofacial, ENT and neurosurgery departments of Necker Hospital.

Clinical research

Projects run by the department, often together with other teams of the institute.

  • immediate breast reconstruction
  • prevention and surgical treatment of lymphoedema
  • treatment of facial palsy
  • simplified sentinel node detection
  • minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery
